This past summer Joe and I went on a road trip up through Vermont and into Canada. There are countless things, places and events I want to share, so I will start randomly in the middle (of course!). The
Shelburne Museum was a gem of a place located just outside of Burlington, Vermont. When driving past the museum, which is a amalgamation of 39 buildings filled to the brim with stuff (I am using this word for lack of a better one) from the collection of the quirky Electra Havemeyer Webb, I couldn't help but feel like I was in Oz. You are transported to a place where you are walking about strewn houses and boats left from the twisters of yore. Most of the buildings were shipped in from other places and in each one an overly helpful guide was stationed. In some instances I found myself slipping out the back door of some 18th century farm house in order to end discussions with the extra eager docents. "The design of that fabric on that chair is reminiscent of New England.." <
door slams> They did have some fantastic stuff in this museum all kidding aside. I was especially impressed with the Automata toys, the contemporary paper sculpture exhibition, old medical/apothecary set up and the shipping container home. There is a lot to see in this place and it covers so much ground that there has to be something in this place that everyone can enjoy. The view of the Appalachian Mountains across Lake Champlain from the parking lot is worth the visit alone. Here are a few pics of the collection.
