Bagels and Royal Mountains

I find myself always pondering the question, "Could I live here?" while I walk around a city for the first time.  When visiting Montreal I thought, "Oui."  On a recent trip to the French Canadian metropolis I found myself sweetly enamored.

They have really good bagels.  I know we all think New York has the best bagels but I would drive a whole day for the carb-olicious goodness of a Montreal bagel.  They are small, sweet and chewy.  I declared a dozen at the border control to the musings of the guards.

They have a mountain in the middle of their city.  It is really tall- trust me I accidentally climbed it.  Mont Royale is a beautiful park, smack in the middle of the city.  The summit can be reached by a serpentine path or a series of lung busting stairs.  Either way you can get a nice view of the city from the top (not the most rewarding summit view I've ever seen, but still nice).  I love mountains and I love cities, so I think that this combo is fantastic.

The Olympic park is worn and Joe was locked inside one night with his family years ago, so we didn't attempt to ride up the elevator.  The Bio-Dome isn't worth a visit unless you really like humid buildings, Canadian plant-life and hanging around school tour groups.  It is too bad though, Pauley Shore got me really excited to visit a Bio-Dome.

Some guy tried to sell us pencils with designs on them while we walked down the street- that was a first.

We used Hotwire to book our hotel and ended up at the Sheraton in the downtown area.  It had the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in and only cost us $105 a night.  I would suggest using Hotwire if you can find a 4-start hotel in an area you want.  We've used it twice now and we always end up at really swank hotels that we would never normally get to stay in on our budget.

I don't know if I've made a good argument for the city of Montreal through this post.  I think it just has a good vibe about it.  It is really clean, the people are nice and there is an unpretentious attitude that exudes from it.  You can walk around and feel comfortable in Montreal.  I loved it and I would recommend it to anyone who loves mountains, bagels and walkable cities.
